I really love your prints and was wondering what type of wood do you use?

Thank you! I’m currently engraving on lemonwood (named because of its colour, not because it is the wood of the lemon tree. It’s scientific name is Calycophyllum Candidissimum and I believe it is of South American origin) It is much easier to engrave than the traditional boxwood, but it still holds the fine lines I want, which can be sometimes lost on a softer wood such as Pear wood. The best maker of blocks is Chris Daunt, http://www.chrisdaunt.com. I hope that helps.

So..I shall be posting up some of the work for the restaurant soon but in the meantime… I have been having thoughts recently about how to combine linocuts and drawing together, as sometimes when I pull a print the faint pen lines from my drawing are also transferred to the print, like a ghost version of the drawing.. This has potential to be explored further as I believe that the bold block colours that I am enjoying creating with the lino could marry very well with a more expressive tonal drawing. I feel some more lithography experimentation coming on. The top image here is a Roy Lichtenstein lithograph, screenprint and woodcut. The way that he has combined all the mediums together is very interesting indeed and has caused me to think about my practice in a new way. I don’t want to end up stuck in a rut, going through routine processes and not learning anything new.

I have also been playing around with some letterpress, a very time consuming day was spent composing and printing but it should prove to be very useful come future projects.

I went up to London yesterday to visit the Society of Wood...

I went up to London yesterday to visit the Society of Wood Engravers annual exhibition and my goodness, was I blown away by the beauty and technical prowess on show!! My favorite piece, shown here, was Neil Bousfield’s ‘Where there was tea, now there is sea.’ The colours and use of lines are astounding! A lot of the work shown is wonderful but tends to be a tad too traditional for me, so to see Bausfield’s dynamic and exciting compositions was very exciting. The exhibition is still on at The Bankside Gallery next to the Tate Modern and I hope one day to exhibit alongside these greats myself.

David Gentleman wood engravings for the London Underground. A...

David Gentleman wood engravings for the London Underground. A really good example of how engravings are still very effective when enlarged.
